Spanish Courses in Cadiz: about Cadiz, Andalusia
Learn Spanish in Cadiz, one of the oldest cities in Western Europe
Cadiz is not only the oldest city in the Western Europe, but it is also the most southern city. The city is situated on the Bay of Cadiz and surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. It is joined to the rest of the Peninsula by a narrow isthmus.
Cadiz was founded by the Phoenicians in the year 1.100 B.C. It was occupied by Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths and Muslims and it was an important port for the discovery of America.
The old part of the city, considered to be a historic monument, is partially surrounded by walls. Its most important monuments are the Cathedral, the Church of Santa Cruz, Torre Tavira the Castles of Santa Catalina and San Sebastián and the Puertas de Tierra (the old gate of the city).
The coastline of the province of Cadiz runs 260 km. and have countless beaches of fine, white sand and crystal clear water. Students appreciate its milder climate thanks to its proximity to the sea, with an average temperature of 17.6ºC and around 300 days of sunshine per year! Nowadays, Cadiz is a city with university flair and its people are welcoming and friendly. The population is about 150,000 inhabitants. The city has many beaches: La Caleta beach, in the old part, and La Victoria, Santa María del Mar and Cortadura beaches in the new part of the city. Cadiz also has important sport facilities and cultural festivals like Carnaval and Semana Santa.
Our highlight
The beauty of the sunsets at Cadiz, from the castles overlooking the beach at Caleta, while the boats rocking the ocean, is a scenary beyond comparison. The ocean, the horizon, the blue sky and the fine sand meet together, making Cadiz goddess of the ocean.
