German Courses in Hamburg: Cultural Program

Written by Fernanda

Cultural Activities in Hamburg

There's so much more to language learning than just learning German in a classroom situation. We are giving you the full package. Experience Hamburg and the Hamburgians during our cultural program in the afternoons and evenings. We are taking you to museums, art exhibitions, on guided walks, pub-crawls and outings to the Baltic Sea, the North Sea and other places of interest, as for example the old Hanseatic city of Lübeck.

Our Culture Program with its wide range of activities takes place every week; as many activities are led in German, they give you further opportunity to practice and improve your knowledge of the language.

All activities are structured and guided by a TANDEM Hamburg «specialist» – come along and meet her!

Here's a quick glance to give you some idea of what we offer:

  • Walk from the historical Fish Market in St. Pauli along the river Elbe to Jenischpark, picnic, football, etc.
  • Guided sight seeing tour by bus, stopovers at interesting sites, followed by a walk through the old tunnel under the river Elbe (built in 1911) to the free port and back.
  • «Town Quiz Hamburg-Altona»
  • The students are solving tasks in town in small groups, and are getting to know this part of Hamburg with a guided walk and talk on the history of the two «sisters» Hamburg and Altona.
  • The pub scene in St. Pauli and Altona – pub quiz, disco and live music. See the Große Freiheit, where the Fab Four started their career.
  • Visit to one of Hamburg´s major football clubs FC St. Pauli or Hamburger Sportverein (HSV).
  • Visit to Hamburg´s main theatre «Schauspielhaus», with a view behind the stage and curtains.
  • Guided excursion to the concentration camp memorial of Neuengamme and its outpost at the school «Schule am Bullenhuser Damm».

German Courses in Hamburg: Accommodation

Accommodation Options in Hamburg

We want our students to feel at home in Hamburg.

Accommodation is therefore chosen carefully, making sure all required standards are met and the places are comfortable and not too far from the school – a maximum of 30 minutes travel time on foot, by bike or by public transport.

We have a great number of landlords and landladies who have been supplying private lodgings for years – you will enjoy your stay with them.

You can choose from the following options:

Private Accommodation (self-catering)

Speak German not just at school; meet German people at home. You live with Germans, sometimes families, sometimes flat sharers, often single people who have a spare room. You have your own room and share kitchen and bathroom with them. Students cater for themselves, either by contributing to the budget or by shopping for themselves.

Private Accommodation (bed & breakfast)

As above; on top of breakfast is included; often this will mean that the students help themselves to the food, as their hosts have jobs and will be out of the house earlier than them.

Private Accommodation (half board)

Have two meals a day with a host family and enjoy the opportunity to experience and practice the German language even more. This option should be booked well in advance of travelling and is an option especially for younger and not so experienced students.

Additional possibilities: we also offer Hostels and Hotels**

Learn German in Hamburg – the «Gateway to the World»

Does Hamburg ring a bell with you? A ship's bell, most probably, and you're right, Hamburg is famous for being the biggest German harbour. But believe us, there's so much more:

Hamburg knows what it takes to create a truly international atmosphere. This city is also a vibrant place for the arts, the media, and - of course - music! The Beatles were probably the most well known, but by no means the only musicians to grow up here and become stars, and the story still continues at the «Große Freiheit» and at lots of other venues.

As for the museums and the sports scene, well there is really too much to find. At the same time, this is a beautiful, green city. There's water everywhere, with hundreds of bridges spanning the canals and the fantastic Alster Lake where you can go sailing in the city centre! Come to this fascinating town and find out why Hamburgians like it so much.

Hamburg Highlights

  • The Fish Market: Sundays from 05.00 to 09.30 a.m. - get up early or party through Saturday night and chill here.
  • The Harbour City: The greatest city developing project; building is well under way and the new «Hafen Philharmonie» on top of an old warehouse will be a major attraction.
  • Hamburger Speicherstadt: The warehouse district, built in the late 19th and early 20th century – a must see for tourists.
  • Hamburger DOM: Four times a year this fun fair next to Reeperbahn attracts fun lovers.
  • Reeperbahn, Große Freiheit, Schanze and Ottensen: This is where it's at: Lots of clubs, bars, theatres and open-air beach clubs!
  • The Alster Lake and the Elbe river: Go sailing and canoeing in the city centre, or relax on the beach close to the school!
  • Two major soccer clubs and more sports: There's plenty of opportunity for fans and active folk for virtually any kind of activity.
  • Theatres and the Opera
