Chile, one of the most fascinating countries in South America
Take a Spanish course in Chile, one of the most beautiful, interesting and sophisticated countries in South America. The 2400 miles (4500 km) long country is tucked in between the Pacific Ocean and the Majestic Andes mountains.
Chile offers a fascinating variety of landscapes and cultures: wide beaches, the fertile central valley with its highly touted wineries, the Atacama Desert in the north, and the pristine wilderness of the south with its volcanoes, lakes, forests and fjords. One can even explore the mysterious Eastern Island and the frozen Antarctic landscape.
Since returning to democracy in 1990, Chile has had a stable political system and strong economy, making it a very safe destination. The inhabitants of Chile are a mixture of Mediterranean immigrants with the Mapuche Indians of the south and the Aymara Indians of the north.
Chilean culture
Chileans call their country «país de poetas» (land of poets). Chile has produced two Nobel Literature laureates: Gabriela Mistral and Pablo Neruda. Other major poets are: Vicente Huidobro, Pablo de Rokha and Nicanor Parra.
Domestic film production in Chile is small but dynamic, it has been steadily growing since the return of democracy in 1990 and the country now produces about 20 motion pictures annually.
In the mid-1960s native musical forms were revitalized by the Parra family with the «Nueva Canción Chilena», which became associated with political activism and reformers like Chilean socialist Salvador Allende and his Popular Unity government. Violeta Parra, Víctor Jara, Los Jaivas, Inti-Illimani, Illapu and Quilapayún are performers of this music.
