Learn Spanish in Uruguay, South America's Switzerland

Also called "South America's Switzerland", Uruguay is a country that offers an incredible amount of options to enjoy nature, quietness, fresh air and stunning beaches. Given its size, distances are short from one attraction to the other. Traveling from north to south by bus takes no more than 8 hours. It is by far one of the safest countries on the continent and you can travel without restrictions.

Its privileged position in the southern cone of the continent permits a policy of regional integration. Furthermore, it's the exit port for the countries of the River Plate basin, and bridges the large countries of Argentina and Brazil. In all, its Atlantic coasts permit fluid communication with the rest of the world.

Uruguay has 450 km of coastline along the River Plate, and 220 km of maritime coastline on the Atlantic, giving room to a great many beautiful, sandy beaches of interest to tourists. As it's located in the temperate zone of the southern hemisphere, Uruguay enjoys a moderate climate. There are sunny days throughout the whole year. The predominant winds are warm and humid from the north, and the winds from the south are cool and dry.

Uruguayan culture

The population of Uruguay is of European origin, mainly Spanish and Italian, giving it an open door immigration policy. There is also a black minority that arrived from the African coasts in the epoch of Spanish hegemony. The indigenous population has disappeared from the national territory more than a century ago, which differentiates the Uruguayan population from that of most Latin American countries.

Uruguayans have a high level of culture and are generally open and friendly towards travellers. They are known for their tranquillity, for their way of being unassuming and familiar; they are lovers of life in the open air and sports, above all football (soccer), the national sport. Uruguayans are always ready to strike up a conversation, to help you get to know their country and integrate those they don't know.

Of all their culinary tastes, the famous "churrasco" and asado (barbecue) of cow meat are the preferred. Italian food is among the most chosen cuisine of Uruguayans, but there is also a variety of international cooking to sample.

Learn Spanish in Montevideo, a quiet, laidback capital

Uruguay's capital, Montevideo, is a smaller, more quiet and laid-back city compared to its big sister, Buenos Aires. It is home to 43% of the country's 2,9 million inhabitants. It offers a wide range of cultural activities all-year round, ranging from museums, theatre, concerts, and popular festivities to international exhibitions and shows.

Its location on the riverfront (Rio de la Plata) is spectacular and the pedestrian walkway along the river ("rambla") is a must for locals and visitors. In summer, beaches are crowded. Uruguayans are nature lovers and the city is full of enormous parks and green areas. The nightlife scene is concentrated in the old part of town, where the Spanish school is located, and offers an ever increasing amount of pubs, restaurants, tango shows, discos, and bars with Brazilian music or even flamenco.

Montevideo preserves architecture from different epochs, styles, and trends that's difficult to find in other places. The Uruguayan capital is considered a garden city, open and filled with trees, where one can breathe the perfume of the flowers.

It also has a number of important museums of fine arts, such as the Nacional de Artes Visuales in the Parque Rodó, or the monument to Torres García in the Old City. Among museums of history, we emphasize the Museo del Gaucho and living museums, such as the Estadio Centenario, seat of the first World Cup in 1930, now declared the World Football Monument by F.I.F.A.

Carnival lasts 40 nights (from February to March), and is the longest in the world. "La murga" is a mix of music, choreography, colorful costumes and political satire. Along with "la murga," "las Llamadas" is characterized by a parade of "lubola" musical groups full of rhythm and color that bring to the present day its movements and drums, the heritage of African music originating from the slaves over two hundred years ago. Given the great popularity of candombe (the drum music), you can see and hear these bands parading through the streets of Montevideo every Saturday and Sunday.

Academia Uruguay, an academically excellent Spanish school with professional service

Academia Uruguay offers Spanish courses for foreigners and other language courses (German, Portuguese, Modern Greek, English, etc.) just off Plaza Matríz / Constitución, in Montevideo, Uruguay.

We offer both individual and group courses on all levels, from beginners' levels to very advanced and even Spanish teacher training courses. Our school is located in a recently restored historic building in heart of the old city of Montevideo, in the pedestrian area. The most interesting parts of the city are in the immediate surroundings of the school. Beaches within a 15 minute walk. We have excellent public transport options to all parts of town.

Since the foundation of the school in 2007, Academia Uruguay has grown to become the leading Spanish language schools in Uruguay, with about 400 students per year and the possibility to combine courses with our sister school, Academia Buenos Aires, in Argentina.

Three fundamental principles guide our work: academic excellence, complete immersion, professional service.

Academia Uruguay has an excellent academic track record. Every year we participate in international seminars and workshops, we produce and edit our own study books and offer teacher training courses for teachers around the world, both online and offline.

Complete immersion is an important part of language learning. It is well known that standalone Spanish classes are not as effective as Spanish classes in a context of permanent cultural immersion. That's why we suggest that our students enrich their learning experience by participating in our extracurricular activities, almost daily and free of charge, and by sharing daily routines with an Uruguayan host family in a homestay arrangement.

We offer professional service in a relaxed and pleasant environment. Our team assists and orients our students during their entire stay with us. Indeed, we make sure they feel comfortable and attended from the very first contact until the end of their stay. We speak most common languages (Spanish, English, German, French, Italian, Portuguese) and will do our utmost to make yours a pleasant experience.

Learn Spanish in Buenos Aires, the Paris of the southern hemisphere

Some people refer to the city of Buenos Aires as the "Paris of the southern hemisphere". Others consider it to be one of the economically most powerful cities in Latin America.

Artists see it as a singular cultural experimentation field. For tourists it is an attraction by itself and the gateway to Argentina's enormous hinterland. For its citizens, the "porteños", Buenos Aires is all of this plus a bit of nostalgia for the good old times.

Buenos Aires' physical structure is a mosaic as varied and diverse as its culture. The city has no dominating monument. Instead, Buenos Aires is composed of many hidden corners and intimate details. Glass-sheathed skyscrapers cast their slender shadows on 19th century Victorian houses. Tango bars fill with the hazy, piquant tang of cigar smoke while dusty, treasure-filled antique shops lie just across the way.

The city's neighbourhoods are small and highly individualized, each with its own characteristic colors and forms. In the District of San Telmo, the city's multinational heritage is embodied in a varied and cosmopolitan architecture - Spanish Colonial design couples with Italian detailing and graceful French art nouveau. Artists left thier mark in La Boca by painting the district's pressed tin houses, leaving the district's side-streets as avenues enveloped in color.

Buenos Aires is never more alive than it is at night. It is what you'd expect from a city that invented tango. Avenues come alive with people on their way to restaurants and theaters, especially in the barrios of Puerto Madero, Recoleta and Palermo. People like to dress up and stay out until dawn. The city's Palermo and Belgrano barrios attract a young crowd of clubbers.
