Barcelona is one of the most beautiful and multicultural cities in Spain. Located on the northeast coast of the Mediterranean, Barcelona is the capital of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia, and the second most populous city in Spain. Just 120 km south of the Pyrenees Mountains and the border with France, through Barcelona passed Iberians, Romans, Jews, Visigoths, Muslims, and Christians.
Here you will find modern buildings by architects such as Lluís Domènech i Montaner, Puig i Cadafalch and the world-renowned Antoni Gaudi. In addition to La Sagrada Familia and Park Güell, other impressive modernist works await you in Barcelona, such as the Palau de la Música, the Hospital de la Santa Cruz y San Pablo, Casa Batlló and La Pedrera.
Equally surprising is the architecture in the historic quarter: El Raval, the Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic) and the Borne. Getting lost in its narrow streets to enjoy the center of Barcelona without rushing, having tapas or drinks and getting to know the medieval roots of Barcelona is one of the plans any visitor to the city cannot miss, and a luxury you will be able to enjoy if you study Spanish in Barcelona.
Equally relevant is contemporary Barcelona, which hosted the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games and left us buildings such as Arata Isozaki’s Palau Sant Jordi, Norman Foster’s Collserola Tower; and Santiago Calatrava’s iconic Montjuïc Telecommunications Tower. The Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA), by Richard Meier, and the Agbar Tower, by Jean Nouvel are examples of the most contemporary Barcelona.
Those who love heights have El Tibidabo, the highest point of the Sierra de Collserola, and the best viewpoint to enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the city of Barcelona, especially at sunset. There you will also find one of Europe’s oldest amusement parks, the Temple of the Sacred Heart, and the Fabra Astronomical Observatory.
Barcelona also has beaches galore. Take a stroll through the Port Vell area, where the famous Barcelona Ramblas ends and the monument to Columbus is located, or along Barceloneta, Somorrostro, San Miquel, San Sebastià, Bogatell or Nova Icària Beaches (just a stone’s throw from the Olympic Village), to enjoy Barcelona’s waterfront atmosphere, sunbathe on the sand, swim in the sea or enjoy a water sport.
Spanish and Catalan are the official languages of Barcelona, so choosing to study Spanish in this city has an additional incentive: in addition to learning the Spanish language and culture, you can also learn some Catalan. We must not forget that this city is also home to the University of Barcelona, one of the most important universities in Spain and highly ranked in international standards.
With numerous museums and monuments, a full cultural agenda, proximity to the sea, and its varied leisure offerings by day and by night, makes Barcelona a perfect place to learn Spanish.
