The Language of the Roman Empire
Millions of people travel to Italy just to hear one of the most beautiful languages ever spoken. Though Italian is considered a Romance language due to its ties to the Roman Empire, many people consider Italian a romantic language for other reasons. Classic operas are sung in Italian, and countless of people believe this is the official language of love.
Italy may be a small country, but it has many different regional dialects. You can often hear the differences by how people pronounce their vowels and through regional slang. Of these dialects, only three are legally recognized: Sardinian (from Sardinia), Ladin (Mountainous range in Northern Italy), and Friulian (Friuli region of Eastern Italy).
Why speak when you can sing? Italian singers are some of the best in the world. From Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli (both of whom were born in Italy), to Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin (both of whom were born from Italian immigrants), these iconic singers went on to make some of the most influential music there is today.
The most important feature of learning a language is the culture that goes along with it. Italians do not speak just in words, they also use gestures. They say that communication is 80% nonverbal, and perhaps that saying is most used in Italy. Italians often talk with their hands, using a lot of nonverbal communication to get a point across. That being said, Italians are not known for being quiet. Sit around an Italian table and you’ll find yourself surrounded by people who have enthusiasm for life.
Italian is a passionate and vibrant language. Once you learn Italian, you’ll have a better understanding of art history, philosophy, and perhaps even your own native tongue.
